Bat out of Hell Review : MK Theatre

Updated: Jun 19

Bonkers, bewildering, yet somehow brilliant!

Bat Out of Hell pulled into Milton Keynes Theatre for its highly anticipated summer run of shows. In short, it’s bonkers, bewildering, yet somehow brilliant.

This show, like Steinman’s original album, defies logic to the fickle musical purists of this world but is loved by millions. Going by the standing ovation given by tonight’s sell out audience it’s was clearly evident this latest production didn’t disappoint the faithful.

The current tour pays homage to the fist-pounding spirit of Meat Loaf and Jim Steinman’s original but also brings a sense of freshness for the millennials to enjoy.

The entire cast collectively throw themselves into the high-energy performance with real passion, and their commitment to the show’s larger-than-life tone is engaging.

The stage set was superb, dark, mysterious and full of new age tech with two huge screens set to 1980s VHS mode and an on-stage cameraman providing close ups of the actors.

Another major plus, and if I’m honest, THE major plus was having a full live band on stage; cleverly camouflaged by steel mesh, pipes and scaffolding but importantly, still visible and loudly audible!

Steinman’s songs are packed with spectacle, sentiment and sheer rock, or should I say Roock! However, trying to comprehend the overall plot via the script and the lyrics of this show is a pointless exercise!

But hey! Who needs a plausible plot when you have a superb cast of actors, dancers, backed up by a great live band playing classic rock anthems on a stage set worthy of the West End.

As I said, bonkers, bewildering, yet somehow brilliant.
